HighSchool – Sony Ericsson

HighSchool - Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson is the third single released by the Australian duo HighSchool as part of their self-titled debut album, out on October 31, 2025, via [PIAS] Australia.

The song explores the strange dynamics of modern connection and how a few words on a screen can take on multiple layers of meaning. The band explained that it was one of their earliest written songs, but was only completed after revisiting and rewriting the original idea until it clicked.

The post-punk duo from Melbourne is comprised of Rory Trobbiani and Luke Scott. The two have also collaborated with Rory’s sister Lilli Trobbiani, and have toured internationally, with shows across Australia, Europe, Japan, and North America. Their sound is often compared to elements of 1980s post‑punk and contemporary melancholic indie, with introspective lyrics that delve into themes of adolescence and emotional vulnerability.

This single made me very nostalgic. It is definitely very relatable on a personal level. I’m very used to obsessing over cryptic text messages, and Sony Ericsson does a great job of capturing the raw emotion of those intense early years.

HighSchool’s first album was recorded in London, East Sussex, and Melbourne. It was produced by Ben Hillier (Blur,  Depeche Mode), and mastered by Grammy winner John Webbeter (David Bowie, Duran Duran, Hozier).

Video directed by Rory Trobbiani & Joel Wilson.

Lyrics

I never know why I get so scared
Reading over a message that you aired

I feel so good when you’re by my side
I got ideas but none of which I’ve tried
And I still love you

I lost my breath, I saw the light
Only God can make you
I rode through Carlton on my bike
I get so lonely with you
I waved at all the passers by
An addict from North Richmond
I left a key under a dried plant
Right next to the door

Are you feeling okay?
Are you feeling more happy these days?
I manifest this song for you
Now you’re going away
Now you’re acting all bratty

But something in her eyes made you die this time
She’s such a girly girl, I can’t get her off my mind
I saw it coming

She’s twisting your arm again
She left you waiting outside with her friends

She lost her card again
Phone is dead
Guess I’ll have to pay
But I still love you anyway

Are you feeling okay?
Are you feeling more happy these days?
I manifest this song for you
Now you’re running away
Now you’re acting all bratty

But something in her eyes made you die this time
She’s such a girly girl, I can’t get her off my mind
I saw it coming
