Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter

Seattle-based duo Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter returned with their long-awaited new album Forever, I’ve Been Being Born, released on Southern Lord Records and Ideologic Organ on November 28th, 2025. It marks their first release in 14 years, following 2011’s Marble Son, and reaffirms their place as one of the most distinctive voices in modern Americana.
Singer-songwriter Jesse Sykes delivers haunting, ethereal vocals that drift between folk, blues, soul, and country, while guitarist Phil Wandscher, a founding member of Whiskeytown, provides atmospheric guitar work that has defined the band’s sound since its formation in 2001. The album blends Americana, folk blues, and psychedelic textures, exploring themes of renewal, mortality, and transcendence.
Standout tracks include Gentle Chaperone, featuring Marissa Nadler, and Dead End Pools, both of which were released with accompanying videos that highlight the duo’s cinematic approach to songwriting. Both videos will be added to the post, so you can take a look and listen.
For new listeners to the band, Forever, I’ve Been Being Born is a perfect entry point. Its lush arrangements and lyrical depth invite exploration of its back catalogue, from the raw intimacy of Reckless Burning (2002) to the expansive soundscapes of Marble Son.
This release is not just a comeback! It’s a reminder of the enduring power of Jesse Sykes’ voice and the duo’s ability to craft music that feels both fragile and eternal.
Gentle Chaperone (Ft. Marissa Nadler)
Lyrics
I changed my mind
I’m on my way
I am on my way
I am on my way
Leave tomorrow
Leave today
I am on my way
I am on my way
O my gentle chaperone
This is where I stay
But this is not my home
O my gentle chaperone
This is where I stay
But this is not my home
Leave the grizzled soul at bay
While he makes his rounds
He may come your way
If he does He’ll have no sway
He will have no sway
He will have no sway
And into something new
I will forge this longing
While I wait for you
O my gentle chaperone
This is where I stay
But this is not my home
This is where I stay
But this is not my home
Dead End Pools
Lyrics
In dead end pools
You and I
Are drifting
In dead end pools
You and I
You and I
Are drifting
Sweet algae blooms
The summers
they grow longer
And you and I
You and I
Still wander
It is true
I never thought
I’d love you
It is true
I never thought
I’d know you
When you were no
When you were no
longer young
Sweet world I knew
For you
my heart grows fonder
But you and I
You and I
Still wander
In dead end pools
